Facts about GranuFlo:
GranuFlo is used in dialysis treatment for patients with kidney problems. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I recall of the dialysis drug GranuFlo manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care (FMC). GranuFlo is a alkaline substances administered to dialysis patients to neutralize the acid that builds up in the blood. It is administered in conjunction with bicarbonate, and contains acetate, an ingredient that the body converts to bicarbonate. GranuFlo contains more acetate than rival products, and therefore result in more bicarbonate in the body. A bicarbonate overdose can cause metabolic alkalosis-a serious disorder that can lead to dangerously low blood pressure, cardiac arrest, heart attack and death.
